TE WHARE
TAPA WHĀ

Connect Whā promotes free community events and workshops provided by various organisaitons, groups and councils across New Zealand with a focus on improving the mental wellbeing of whānau in our communities. Our aim is to increase the awareness of the connections and support that exist within our communities and highlight the many groups, events and services that can nourish and collectively strengthen our te whare tap wha.

We focus on four key areas: Taha Whānau (Strengthening family), Taha Wairua (strengthening spirituality), Taha Tinana (Strengthening your body) and Taha Hinengaro (Strengthening your emotional and mental wellbeing). When all these things are in balance, we thrive. When one or more of these is out of balance our wellbeing is impacted.

Connect Whā is working to increase knowledge of the lighthouses (beacons of knowledge) where the community can engage and link directly with organisations which support the four connection points. These organisations build resilience and support, lessening the barriers and minimizing risk associated with suicide and mental health.

Whānau, a vital dimension of Te Whare Tapa Whā, encompasses the social and familial aspects of well-being in Maori culture. It emphasizes the significance of strong and supportive relationships within the family and wider community.

Whānau extends beyond biological ties, recognizing the importance of a collective network that provides love, care, and a sense of belonging. In this holistic model, the health and well-being of an individual are intricately linked to the well-being of their whānau. Strengthening Whānau involves fostering positive connections, communication, and mutual support, acknowledging the crucial role that social and familial relationships play in achieving overall balance and wellness in Te Whare Tapa Whā.

In the Maori holistic health model of Te Whare Tapa Whā, Tinana refers to the physical dimension of well-being. This dimension acknowledges the significance of maintaining a healthy body through proper nutrition, exercise, rest, and overall physical care. Tinana emphasizes the interconnectedness of the body with the other dimensions of well-being, highlighting the idea that a healthy physical state contributes significantly to mental, emotional, and spiritual balance. By prioritizing the well-being of the Tinana, individuals can enhance their overall health and resilience, fostering a holistic approach to wellness within the framework of Te Whare Tapa Whā.
